u About Our Medical Director . . .

Tsun-Nin Lee, M.D., is the Director of the San Francisco Medical Clinic for the Treatment of Pain, P.C.  He received his B.A. degree in Chemistry from Columbia College in 1966, his M.D. degree from New York University School of Medicine in 1970, and received his post-graduate training in internal medicine at the University Hospital of Jacksonville, Florida.

Dr. Lee has been licensed to practice medicine in California since 1971.  His primary professional interests are in pain management and other complex medical conditions.  He has published numerous scientific articles in various medical journals and has been recognized internationally, especially for his contribution as the author and proponent of the Thalamic Neuron Theory, an important paper elucidating the pathophysiology of chronic pain and chronic diseases.

Beginning in the late 1970’s, as the Director of the Academy of Pain Research, Dr. Lee organized numerous meetings in conjunction with the Cornell Medical Center and the UCSF School of Medicine faculty to popularize the concept of a multi-disciplinary approach to pain management.  Since 1979, Dr. Lee has been the course chairman for the North American Symposium on Acupuncture and Peri-Symposium Seminars and Workshops, an educational program for physicians that has been co-sponsored by prominent universities such as Cornell University, Stanford University, the University of California at Irvine, and University of British Columbia.  These meetings have educated thousands of doctors from across the United States in effective treatment methods for chronic pain.  Dr. Lee was also selected as one of a handful of medical specialists to meet and confer with five top pain specialists from the Soviet Union in a program sponsored by the National Institute of Health.  Dr. Lee has also been the guest of many TV and radio shows and has been the subject of many newspaper articles.  (See News Clippings)

Regardless of how well acupuncture and herbal remedies work, there are many divergent theories that attempt to explain the mechanism of these treatment modalities.  Dr. Tsun-Nin Lee's studies offer a theoretical basis for traditional Chinese medicine using  Western medical models.  The papers are breakthroughs that incorporate modern brain research to demonstrate how ancient techniques work.

Dr. Lee has published many articles on the subject. Following are two sample papers regarding the Thalamic Neuron Theory (TNT) and two additional articles authored by Dr. Lee.

t Thalamic Neuron Theory: A Hypothesis
Thalamic Neuron Theory: A Hypothesis Concerning Pain and Acupuncture
